Snapchat, despite lawsuits and promises to reform, is exposing kids to drugs, mental health issues and sexual predators at an increasing rate. Jonathon Haidt’s article covering these topics will be a focus. Plus in Michigan, we gave away 159 million for a project that hasn’t started, and doesn’t have a named buyer for the Mundy Mystery Project. EGLE has finally fined for lack of permits. But EGLE is also dolling millions for solar projects, despite Michigan citizens rejecting them. Plus we’ll cover more AI, Palantir, and the CCP possibly funding the Mayor of Boston.

CCP Funded Boston Mayor?

https://dailycaller.com/2025/04/14/michelle-wu-campaign-bankrolled-gary-yu-chinese-intel-agency/

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s campaign has come under scrutiny following reports that it received significant donations from Gary Yu, an individual allegedly linked to Chinese intelligence agencies. This revelation has raised concerns about foreign influence in local elections.  Gary Yu is the co-chairman of the New England Chinese American Alliance. That group helped raise $300,000 for Wu’s mayoral campaign in 2021.

  • Yu founder of Boston International Media Consulting and leader of a Chinese civic association, is listed as an official by an agency of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence and intelligence service called the United Front Work Department (UFWD). Reports from the CCP, Chinese state media, and civic associations led by Yu suggest that he also operates as a recruiter for the Chinese government.
  • Talent Recruitment for China: Yu has reportedly agreed to headhunt U.S. talent for at least half a dozen Chinese regional governments, including the cities of Hangzhou and Guangzhou. In November 2019, the CCP announced that Yu agreed to establish an “Overseas Talent Recruitment Work Station” in North America for the party’s Organization Department in Nanning. The Organization Department oversees China’s talent recruitment programs, like the Thousand Talents Plan, which aims to enhance China’s scientific and military capabilities. Yu has also agreed to help recruit U.S. talent to support China’s high-tech development, including in artificial intelligence.
  • Ties to Chinese Intelligence: Yu has repeatedly met with high-ranking CCP intelligence leaders in China and is listed as an official by regional branches of the UFWD. The UFWD uses a “unique blend of engagement, influence activities, and intelligence operations” to shape its political environment, including influencing other countries’ policies and gaining access to advanced foreign technology
  • The All-China Federation Of Returned Overseas Chinese (ACFROC) branch in Zhejiang province lists Yu as an “overseas committee member”. ACFROC is a UFWD agency specializing in overseas influence operations, allegedly including directing Chinese community leaders to illegally establish a secret Chinese police station in New York City. Michael Lucci, CEO of State Armor, stated that China’s strategy to influence state and local policymakers involves hundreds of ostensibly “civil society” organizations affiliated with the CCP’s UFWD, engaging in influence peddling, intelligence collection, and intellectual property theft

SnapChat Is Causing Significant Harm in Children

Snapchat's new AI chatbot and its impact on young people | Childnet

https://www.afterbabel.com/p/industrial-scale-snapchat

On October 1, 2024, investigative journalist Jeff Horwitz reported a startling statistic from an internal Snap Inc. email quoted in a court case against Snap Inc., the company which owns Snapchat. The email noted that the company receives around 10,000 reports of sextortion each month—and that figure is likely “only a fraction of the total abuse occurring on the platform.

The authors were able to obtain legal filings from court cases involving SnapChat.  These communications, including emails, reports, memos, and internal chat logs, were obtained through various legal proceedings filed against Snap Inc..

Specifically, the authors of this post examined:

  • Multiple court cases filed against Snap Inc. between 2022 and 2025, including those part of the Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) and Judicial Council Coordinated Proceedings (JCCP).
  • Over 6000 such lawsuits named Snap Inc.
  • Significant cases brought by state attorneys general from Nevada and New Mexico. The authors explicitly state they draw heavily from the complaints filed by these attorneys general.
  • The civil action second amended complaint, Neville et al. v. Snap.
  • Haidt’s team created annotated versions of the New Mexico, Nevada, and Neville et al. briefs to show the context of the selections they chose. The post clarifies that bolded text within the harm cluster sections represents direct quotations from company employees, consultants, executives, and internal memos, while the surrounding non-bolded text often comes directly from the indicated Attorney General briefs, providing context for the internal Snap quotations. Therefore, the email quotes are pieces of evidence disclosed during these legal processes, revealing internal discussions and awareness within Snap Inc. regarding the harms associated with their platform.

Mental Health And Addiction

  • Snapstreaks: Internal communications reveal that Snap employees recognized the addictive potential of Snapstreaks. An internal email in 2017 noted, “Wow, we should add more addicting features like this”.  There was also an internal investigation into whether streaks were a driver of engagement, with the hunch being that they start as a byproduct but eventually become a driver.  A 2018 presentation acknowledged that “Streaks have become pressure filled…” and highlighted users’ fear of missing out (FOMO) associated with them. By 2019, a presentation recognized that “Streaks make it impossible to unplug for even a day” and that maintaining them “causes pressure”. Internal research in 2018 found that over a third of users reported keeping a Snap Streak alive was “extremely” or “very important” and that the stress level was “large” or even “intolerable”.
  • Push Notifications and Snap Stories: The briefs allege that features like push notifications and Snap Stories are part of the design to maximize engagement and drive problematic social media use among minors.

  • Constant Accessibility: A 2018 presentation noted that “Gen Zs see their mobile devices as an extension of themselves, and while this allows constant access, it also creates constant pressure. There is never a break from the very real FOMO that exists”. This constant connectivity, facilitated by Snapchat’s design, contributes to compulsive checking and use.

  • Quick Add: While discussed more in the context of connecting users with harmful content, the Quick Add feature also serves to expand users’ networks and potentially increase engagement by suggesting new accounts to add.

  • Engagement-based Algorithms: The authors of the source suggest removing engagement-based algorithms, at least for underage users, indicating their belief that these algorithms contribute to problematic use.

The real-life example of Jack McCarthy illustrates the consequences of this design. According to the complaint Neville v. Snap, Jack’s Snapchat use coincided with a decline in his mental health, and he became “locked into Snap’s social media product, as intended, causing him to feel like he couldn’t sleep without it”. His agitation when his parents limited his access further highlights the addictive nature of the platform for him. Tragically, he eventually obtained fentanyl-laced drugs through an anonymous dealer on Snapchat who had added him via the Quick Add feature, leading to his death

Locating Your Children & Drug Dealing on Snap Chat

Drug Dealers Dream

“per our analysis, on average at least ~700,000 Snapchatters are exposed to drug content daily in the areas we scanned“. This information was part of a presentation by the security firm Crisp that advised Snap on the ease of accessing illegal substances on the platform. The slide in the presentation was even headed “Enabling Easy Access to Illegal Substances” and stated that “It takes under a minute to use Snapchat to be in position to purchase illegal and harmful substances

Snapchat has been used in half of all online grooming activities

  • Snap Map can be used to track down users in real-time: The source provides a real-life example where a 25-year-old man allegedly used Snap Map to track down and sexually assault a 16-year-old girl in Florida. Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect used Snap Map to track the victim based on the metadata in her “life story” post, knowing exactly where she posted it from. They warned that if users don’t hide their location when posting, the data hidden in the photo can be used to track them down.

  • Snap was aware of privacy concerns regarding Snap Map: As early as June 2017, Snap’s Trust and Safety (T&S) Team Leads discussed “Snap Map Privacy Concerns”. One user reported that a group of older men found them on Snap Map at a party and tried to enter, threatening to hurt them. Another user reported their account was hacked and was worried the hackers could see their location on Snap Map. This user felt the feature was unsafe, even if Ghost Mode was enabled, as Snaps submitted to “Our Story” could still appear on the heat map.

  • Experts warned about the risks of Snap Map: In July 2017, an article circulated among Snap employees included an interview with the Chief Executive of Parent Zone, who warned that Snap Map added nothing to users’ lives and was a threat to their security, advising users to turn it off. The article also noted the danger of “strangers or online acquaintances [users] have never met in real life” being able to see children’s exact locations. It was mentioned that police had used a decoy account to pinpoint locations from videos of potentially harmful activities.

  • Snap acknowledged that Snap Map could lead to unwanted “Friend Requests”: In a November 2020 internal document, Snap admitted that “Previously public content (e.g., posts to the Map) could generate ‘Friend Requests’ from illegitimate friends (people who the account holder did not know and may not have wanted to be connected with)”. This suggests that Snap Map could not only reveal location but also facilitate contact from strangers.

  • Employees proposed additional safety controls for Snap Map due to vulnerability to predators: In September 2022, Snap employees suggested more safety controls for Snap Map, acknowledging that it made young users more vulnerable to predators through friend requests from strangers. They noted that “Underaged users become even more vulnerable if the predators make friends with them and see their trail on the map”. The suggestion was to consider requiring users to accept friend requests from those outside their normal friend network, as predatory behavior often involves adults trying to add many kids

  • A “Sextortion handbook” identified Snap Maps as a tool for targeting minors: Snap’s internal documents reportedly contained a “Sextortion handbook” showing how predators could use Snap Maps to target schools by viewing Snap Stories shared with the “snap maps” option enabled

  • Quick Add: This feature allows adult strangers to easily connect with minors, which can be a starting point for grooming and subsequent sextortion

  • Ephemeral Nature of Messages: The disappearing messages create a perceived sense of privacy, which can embolden both predators and victims in engaging in risky behaviors like sending nude images, a common precursor to sextortionThe company itself recognized that some bad actors prefer Snapchat due to the ephemerality of communications

Ignoring Reports

Snap’s internal documents reveal a reliance on user reporting for illegal activity in private communications, and they acknowledge that they do not actively monitor or scan these communications like private phone calls or SMS messages. Furthermore, even when reports are made, they were often ignored, with one internal chat in January 2022 discussing that “by design, over 90% of account level reports are ignored today”

An internal Snap Inc. email from October 2024 which stated the company receives around 10,000 reports of sextortion each month

Ending All Labor – Tamay Besiroglu and Startup Mechanize

The Rundown AI | Epoch co-founder Tamay Besiroglu just launched Mechanize, a new startup developing virtual environments and training data to enable AI... | Instagram

https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/19/famed-ai-researcher-launches-controversial-startup-to-replace-all-human-workers-everywhere/

A renowned AI researcher has launched a startup aiming to automate all human labor, sparking ethical and economic debates. The initiative seeks to develop AI systems capable of performing tasks across various industries.

Proponents argue that such advancements could lead to unprecedented efficiency and productivity. However, critics warn of massive job displacement and the societal implications of widespread automation.

The mission of Mechanize directly raises the question of the economic consequences of widespread automation. Besiroglu argues that it could lead to “explosive economic growth,” higher living standards, and new goods and services. However, this optimistic view is countered by the concern that if humans don’t have jobs, they won’t have the income to purchase the products produced by AI agents. Besiroglu suggests that humans might find “more valuable in complementary roles that AI cannot perform” or rely on income from other sources like rents, dividends, and government welfare

Given that we have companies that are so unconcerned for children, what makes us think they regard adults with any less disdain and won’t forge ahead regardless of the outcomes.  Remember what Zuckerberg and the Meta / facebook Mafia said:  Break Things, Move Fast.

The new promise are AI Agents that perform long running tasks with very little human interaction.

Reality:  AI Agents are described as unreliable, struggling to retain information, unable to independently complete tasks as asked, and incapable of executing long-term plans without errors.  Besiroglu acknowledges that the technical issues to achieve full automation are significant. Despite these limitations, large companies like Salesforce and Microsoft, as well as numerous startups, are actively building agentic platforms

Shutting Down Wind Power in NY

https://www.dailysignal.com/2025/04/19/trump-administration-halts-new-york-offshore-wind-project/

  • The Trump administration has halted a massive New York offshore wind project, the Empire Wind Project, as it conducts a financial and regulatory review of plans to erect turbines along the nation’s coastlines. The Interior Department issued an order calling for an immediate halt to construction “until further review,” citing new information suggesting that the Joe Biden administration “rushed through its approval without sufficient analysis”.
  • Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the approval was rushed without sufficient analysis or consultation among relevant agencies regarding potential effects. The halt will remain in effect until a further review addresses these “serious deficiencies”.
  • The project’s developer, Norway-based Equinor, stated that it is complying with the order to halt the project but is considering a potential legal challenge. They have initiated the suspension of relevant marine activities to ensure the safety of workers and the environment and are engaging with authorities to clarify the matter and considering legal remedies, including an appeal.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the decision, stating that Empire Wind 1 already employs hundreds of New Yorkers, including 1,000 “good-paying union jobs,” and is part of a growing sector that has “already spurred significant economic development and private investment”. She argued that the fully federally permitted project had already started construction before President Trump’s executive orders and represents the type of bipartisan energy solution that should be pursued. Hochul vowed to fight the federal overreach to protect union jobs, affordable energy, and New York’s economic future.
  • The Empire Wind project is among several offshore wind projects under development off the Atlantic coastline that could be impacted by the Bureau of Ocean Management’s review of federal leases. President Donald Trump had campaigned on a promise to end the offshore wind industry, arguing it is too expensive and harms birds and marine animals. He had previously issued an order suspending new leasing for wind projects in federal waters.
  • Massachusetts is working with Rhode Island on three offshore wind projects totaling 2,678 megawatts, which could power over 1.4 million homes when completed. In August, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded $389 million to Massachusetts and several New England states for power grid improvements aimed at increasing the region’s capacity for offshore wind. The Power Up New England plan involves Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and several utilities to expand and upgrade interconnection points for undersea cables from offshore wind turbines.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted emergency status to Enbridge’s proposed tunnel for its Line 5 pipeline, expediting a crucial federal permitting process. This move follows a directive from President Donald Trump’s emergency energy declaration, aimed at boosting U.S. energy production to meet rising demand.

The Line 5 tunnel, a $750 million project, will house an aging oil pipeline beneath the Great Lakes. While Michigan regulators approved the project in 2023, it had been awaiting federal permits. The Army Corps indicated that the permit request met criteria for emergency status due to potential severe impacts on energy supply, safety, or the economy if not rapidly addressed.

Environmental groups and tribal nations have voiced significant concerns, arguing that the fast-track decision undermines environmental and climate considerations while risking harm to sensitive ecosystems. Seven Native American tribes have ceased consultations with the Corps beyond historic property impacts, citing inadequate consideration of spill risks and climate change.

Despite legal hurdles, the Army Corps and Michigan’s environmental agency remain key approvals before tunnel construction can begin. Environmental and legal opposition continues to challenge the timeline and legitimacy of the expedited permitting process.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has requested an emergency declaration from President Trump following a historic ice storm in northern Michigan. If approved, up to $5 million in federal funds would be allocated for cleanup and recovery efforts.

The state estimates that response costs have already exceeded $7 million, highlighting the financial strain on local and state resources. The National Guard has been deployed to assist in recovery operations.

Federal assistance under the Stafford Act begins with an emergency declaration, providing immediate aid, and can be followed by a major disaster declaration for more extensive support. Damage assessments are underway to determine eligibility for additional federal aid.

Officials emphasize the importance of federal support in addressing the disaster’s impact, noting that local and tribal entities have been actively involved in response efforts. The situation underscores the challenges of disaster preparedness and funding allocation.

Millions for Car Leases

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/michigan-pays-4m-monthly-to-lease-5783-vehicles

The state of Michigan pays approximately $4 million each month to lease 5,783 vehicles, averaging $692 per vehicle. Some leases exceed $2,000 monthly, with the highest being a Caterpillar Sonic drill rig at $10,840 per month.

The fleet includes a variety of vehicles from major automakers, as well as specialized equipment like buses, tractors, and snow blowers. The Department of Technology, Management, and Budget oversees these leases.

Critics question the cost-effectiveness of leasing such a large number of vehicles, especially those with high monthly payments. They suggest evaluating the necessity and utilization of these assets to ensure fiscal responsibility.

The state also owns 4,800 vehicles, indicating a significant investment in transportation assets. Discussions continue regarding the balance between leasing and owning vehicles to optimize expenditures.
